This pirate site is primarily intended for young people. However, it is hoped that it will also appeal to adults who want to learn more about the exciting world of pirates that visited Mauritius and Rodrigues.
For almost as long as ships have sailed across the oceans to carry out trade with other countries, there have been pirates. The first pirates were recorded over 2,000 years ago in Ancient Greece and piracy has continued all over the world since then.
Pirates sailed across the Indian Ocean in the late 1600's and early 1700's, attacking and robbing other ships and living off the ill-gotten gains. Most of the pirates at this time would have sailed near the shores of Mauritius and Rodrigues just long enough to go ashore, repair their ships, search for food and rest for a little while. After an attack on a ship, pirates usually had a lot of valuable items that they didn't want to leave on board, so they often hid their treasure on land until they set sail again. Sometimes they would leave their treasure for longer periods of time, intending to return later to collect it, although this didn't always go to plan.
This pirate site is part of an Educational Project for Primary Schools in Mauritius, Rodrigues and Agalega. Most children who use this site will have read the book, 'Pirate secrets of Mauritius and Rodrigues'. The Project is jointly sponsored by Princes Tuna (Mauritius) Ltd and the Circle Charitable Trust.
